The Illinois hog industry, a major contributor to the state’s agricultural economy, finds itself in a period of cautious optimism. According to the latest USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) report released in June 2024, Illinois hog numbers held steady at approximately 5.6 million head. This represents a continuation of the upward trend observed since 2023.
While overall inventory is positive, there are some nuances to consider. The report indicates a slight decrease in the number of market hogs weighing over 180 pounds compared to June 2023. Although we like our hogs fat, this suggests a potential slowdown in slaughter numbers in the coming months. Now, some analysts point to a rise in the 120-179 weight class, suggesting pigs are on track to reach market weight soon.
Farrowing intentions for summer 2024 are also down slightly compared to last year, which could lead to a decrease in piglets entering the market in the latter part of the year. However, it’s important to note that these are intentions, and actual farrowing numbers could deviate.
Overall, the picture for Illinois hog production in June 2024 is one of cautious stability. While there are some headwinds, the industry appears to be navigating them with a focus on long-term sustainability. The coming months will be crucial in determining the impact of farrowing intentions and market forces on the state’s hog production.
