Train enthusiasts and history lovers in California and Utah are in for a treat this summer. Union Pacific Railroad announced today the return of their iconic Big Boy No. 4014, the world’s largest operating steam locomotive.

However, a tinge of disappointment hangs over the excitement for some. The 2024 tour focuses on the western states, leaving out a stop in the Chicago area, where Big Boy No. 4014 has captivated audiences in the past. Local train enthusiasts who were hoping for a repeat performance will have to travel significant distances to catch a glimpse of this legendary locomotive this summer.

The behemoth locomotive will embark on its 2024 Westward Bound Tour, making whistle-stop appearances across five states. Highlighting the tour will be public display events in Roseville, California (July 12-13) and Ogden, Utah (July 20-21). These events will offer a unique opportunity for the public to get up close to this 1.2 million-pound marvel of engineering.

In addition to the awe-inspiring presence of Big Boy No. 4014, visitors will also have the chance to explore the “Experience the Union Pacific” rail car. This interactive exhibit offers a captivating journey through the rich history of railroads, providing a valuable educational experience alongside the iconic locomotive.

The tour officially begins on June 30th when Big Boy departs its home base in Cheyenne, Wyoming. It will then embark on a grand journey, traversing Wyoming, Utah, Nevada, and California, with a brief visit to southeastern Idaho on its return trip.
