The strategic importance of Panama to the United States cannot be overstated. It is one brick in the foundation of our maritime dominance in the Western Hemisphere, a vital artery for trade and commerce, and a bulwark against hostile foreign influence.

Panama’s strategic location, situated on the Isthmus of Panama, has long made it a pivotal crossroads for international trade. Its narrow landmass serves as a natural bridge connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, a unique geographical advantage that has been exploited for centuries. The Panama Canal, a marvel of engineering, was constructed to bypass the treacherous journey around Cape Horn, revolutionizing maritime transportation. As a result, Panama became a vital chokepoint for international commerce, with countless ships passing through its waters each year.

For the United States, the Panama Canal has been a cornerstone of its economic and strategic interests. Its expansion in 2016 has significantly increased the canal’s capacity, allowing for the passage of larger vessels. This development has not only boosted Panama’s economy but has also solidified the United States’ position as a dominant player in the region. By facilitating trade and enhancing connectivity between the two oceans, the expansion of the canal strengthened the United States’ strategic advantage and reinforced its role as a global maritime power.

While we have made significant strides in securing our interests in the Western Hemisphere, it is imperative that we remain vigilant against emerging threats, such as Communist China. Communist China’s rapidly increasing influence, particularly in Panama, presents a substantial challenge to our strategic interests. The communist nation’s aggressive economic penetration, coupled with its expanding military capabilities, has the potential to erode our long-standing regional dominance. As Communist China continues to assert itself as a global power, we must proactively address these challenges to ensure the continued security and stability in the region.

Given Panama’s strategic geopolitical location, it is absolutely essential that the United States maintains a robust military presence in the region. Our naval and air forces serve as a powerful deterrent, signaling to potential adversaries, like Communist China, that any aggression towards Panama or the Panama Canal will be met with swift and decisive action. The Canal, a vital artery of global trade, is a critical infrastructure asset that must be protected at all costs.

Beyond the military aspect, cultivating strong diplomatic relationships with Panama’s government is equally crucial. By supporting their efforts to combat corruption and promote economic development, we can strengthen our bilateral ties and ensure the stability of the region. A prosperous and secure Panama benefits both nations and contributes to regional peace and stability.

By doing so, we can safeguard our interests in Panama and prevent Communist China from establishing a foothold in this strategic region. The future of the Western Hemisphere depends on our ability to maintain our dominance and protect our vital interests.
