The international landscape of today presents unprecedented challenges to the United States. The return of bipolarity or even tripolarity similar to the Cold War demands a nuanced approach to statecraft, one that prioritizes national interest within a complex web of global relationships. Defining and defending this national interest is a paramount responsibility of the American government.

Our national interest, at its essence, is the well-being of the American people. It encompasses not only physical security but also economic prosperity and the enduring values enshrined in our Constitution. It is the ability to flourish in a world that respects the principles of liberty, democracy, and the rule of law.

However, mere definition is insufficient. The true test lies in the strategic application of this concept. In a world fraught with ideological fissures and nascent threats, simplistic solutions rarely serve our long-term goals. We must navigate this intricate geopolitical landscape with both prudence and resolve.

Several key principles should guide our pursuit of the national interest:

Continued collective security through alliances with nations who share our core values. Fostering such partnerships deters aggression and promotes a more stable international order.

Interdependence and shared prosperity in which our economic well-being is linked to a thriving global marketplace. Fair and open trade fosters mutual prosperity, creating a climate conducive to cooperation and reducing the potential for conflict.

Deterrence and proportionality in which the United States will never waver in its commitment to the defense of itself and its allies. However, the use of force should be a last resort, employed with clearly defined objectives and overwhelming power to ensure a swift and decisive outcome.

The pursuit of the national interest is an ongoing endeavor, demanding constant reevaluation and adaptation. We must guard against the siren song of isolationism, while also recognizing the pitfalls of perpetual foreign intervention. The path forward requires a judicious balance – unwavering commitment to our core values, a willingness to engage constructively with the international community, and the resolve to defend our vital interests whenever necessary.

The path outlined above is not without its hurdles.  There are two primary camps that often challenge this approach to the national interest.

Interventionists argue that a robust defense of freedom necessitates proactive intervention to stamp out threats wherever they may arise. While I understand this fervor, a blanket policy of interventionism risks overextending our resources and embroiling us in protracted conflicts. Our interventions must be strategic, with clear objectives and achievable goals.

Isolationists advocate for a retreat from global affairs, focusing solely on domestic concerns. This approach, however, ignores the harsh reality of interdependence in the modern world. We cannot simply turn away from international threats, as isolationism only emboldens our adversaries and weakens our ability to shape a world order conducive to American interests.

Finding the middle ground between these extremes is crucial.  We must be a champion of liberty, but a prudent one, wielding influence through diplomacy, economic strength, and a clear demonstration of our unwavering commitment to our allies.

The United States, throughout its history, has thrived as a beacon of hope for those yearning for freedom. Our national interest is intrinsically linked to the promotion of democratic values and a rules-based international order.  By demonstrating the virtues of a free society – economic opportunity, political liberty, free press, and a just legal system – we inspire others to follow our path.

However, true leadership goes beyond mere pronouncements.  We must lead by example, upholding our democratic principles at home and abroad.  A strong and vibrant democracy serves as the most potent advertisement for the American way of life.

The pursuit of the national interest, in essence, is the pursuit of a world where the United States, alongside its allies, can flourish in peace and prosperity.  It is a grand undertaking, one that demands wisdom, resolve, and an unwavering faith in the enduring principles upon which this nation was built.
