Federal prosecutors in Chicago yesterday announced charges against three men accused of using their vehicles to impede and interfere with federal law enforcement agents in separate incidents earlier this month.
The criminal complaints, filed today in the U.S. District Court in Chicago, allege that two of the defendants forcibly rammed vehicles driven by federal agents, while the third is charged with rear-ending a law enforcement vehicle and interfering with officers’ work. All three defendants have since made their initial appearances in federal court.
Widman Osberto Lopez Funes, 18, of Bensenville, IL, faces two felony charges: assault of a federal officer and depredation of U.S. property. Prosecutors allege that on October 1, 2025, Lopez Funes forcibly struck a vehicle occupied by officers from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) while driving in Bensenville.
In a separate incident, Miguel Escareno De Loera, 20, of Woodridge, IL, is charged with felony assault of a federal officer. The complaint states that De Loera allegedly struck an ICE ERO vehicle on three separate occasions in Woodridge on October 2, 2025.
Joel Gonzalez, 23, of Chicago, is charged with the misdemeanor offense of forcibly impeding and interfering with a federal officer. Gonzalez is accused of driving a vehicle in Chicago on October 2, 2025, and interfering with a group of vehicles being driven by agents from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
The federal charges were jointly announced by Andrew S. Boutros, United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois, and Matthew J. Scarpino, Special Agent-in-Charge of ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations in Chicago.
