For decades, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (KORD) has been the Windy City’s primary hub for international air cargo. However, a recent development has seen some of that action shift westward to the quieter skies over Rockford, Illinois. Maersk, a global logistics giant, launched a new three-times-weekly cargo route in June 2023, connecting Chicago Rockford International Airport (KRFD) with Zhengzhou, China.
Rockford’s position offers a couple advantages. First, less congested airspace allows for smoother operations and potentially faster delivery times. Second, the airport boasts ample space for expansion, making it an attractive option for Maersk’s future growth plans.
This development is an economic boon for both Rockford and the surrounding area. The increased air cargo is expected to create jobs, not just at the airport itself, but also in related sectors like warehousing and logistics. It also strengthens Rockford’s position as a player in the global supply chain.
While Chicago O’Hare likely won’t be dethroned anytime soon, Rockford’s emergence as a cargo hub signifies a diversification in the region’s airfreight landscape. This new route between Rockford and China is expected to play a key role in expediting trade and fostering economic growth in the years to come.
